Monday, March 7th, for the sixth webinar of the Biobridge winter-season, we were fortunate to have two surgeons, Prof. Giuseppe Filiberto Serraino and Dr. Ali Modaressi, discussing the value of PRP in surgery and the healing process.
Professor Giuseppe Filiberto Serraino, M.D. PhD. Cardiothoracic Surgeon (IT) explored the prophylactic value of PRP and ATS (Thrombin) in surgeries, such as sternotomy, for preventing infections. He began by describing the cascades of events induced by the injection of thrombin activated PRP that lead to an anti-infective effect of PRP. PRP is used in the prevention of infections, on wounds, and in the case of bone infections.
According to him, PRP can also be combined with antibiotic treatments and has no side effects. The surgeon presented a meta-analysis of platelet gel for prevention of sternal wound infections following cardiac surgery to support this point.
He then illustrated with photographs the protocol he applies during sternal surgery. Finally, he presented the results of a study showing that use of PRP can significantly prevent the occurrence of DSWI (deep sternal wound infection) and SSWI (uperficial sternal wound infection) in cardiac surgery.
In the second segment, Dr. Ali Modarassi, Plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgeon (CH), presented 3 in vitro studies demonstrating the effects of PRP on fibroblast proliferation and migration, stem cell proliferation, angiogenesis modulation and improvement of wound healing.
He also shared with us the combined effects of PRP and fat grafting through the presentation of clinical cases.
The session is already accessible on replay on the Biobridge site
We hope to meet you next Monday for the following events of the program
